"Former Alcoholic Takes No Excuses When Helping Addicts Recover"

Bruce Cotter has heard all the excuses. He's probably used them
all, too.
That's where the excuses come in. No matter how enormous the
cost or great the pain (or distended the liver), most alcoholics
and addicts will resist giving up the substance to which they are
enslaved.
"I help people who don't want to be helped," Cotter said
recently from his office in suburban Baltimore. "...They're
masters of manipulation. They're squirrelly. They see that this is
the end, and they're going to lose the very best friend they ever
had. And I'm taking it away." "My goal is for it (entering
treatment) to be their idea..."
